Microbes as agents of health
While we commonly think of microbes as agents of disease, microbes also constitute the very foundation of our well-being. The term “probiotics,” which was originally introduced as a counterpoint to “antibiotics,” refers to the beneficial bacteria that dwell within the intestinal tract. Probiotics are appropriately described as “friendly bacteria,” as they enhance immune competence, suppress autoimmunity, keep inflammation under control, affect mood and emotion, and influence our ability to sleep soundly.
